DONCASTER ST LEGER 1839

The 64th winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 17th September 1839 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Charles XII, a brown colt by Voltaire out of Wagtail, owned by Major Yarburgh. A field of 14 runners contested the race, although there were 107 subscriptions of 50 sovereigns each, which was worth 5350 sovereigns. (Equivalent to £545,700 in 2017)

This race was unique in being the first St Leger to produce a dead-heat between Charles XII and Euclid in 3 minutes 25 seconds. In the run-off Charles XII prevailed by a head. He was a prolific winner in a career stetching over 34 races, being victorious on 19 occasions and runner up on 6 occasions. He won the Doncaster Cup at the same meeting having previously won the Liverpool Tradesmans Cup. In 1841 and 1842 he won the Goodwood Cup. Over Round 109%
